Lenka was born in The Czech Republic; she lives and works in Prague. She received her Master Degree at The Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. During her studies, she went through several internships including typography training at The Academy of Art and Architecture in Prague, one year experimenting at the Architecture school at the home Academy, as well as the internship at The Cooper Union School of Art in New York.

Her artistic approach is interdisciplinary. The conceptual part of her projects is as important
as the visual part is. It is necessary to harmonize both of the phenomena. Even though her previous background was deeply concentrated on drawing, she uses various media nowadays. The intersection between drawing and sculpture, between two and three-dimensional space, is her central interest and she expresses her ideas by working with these forms.

Most of her projects are based on architectural explorations. She transforms the limited language of architecture into unlimited images of art. „I play with architecture by removing its functions, even senses. I liberate architectural plans from their foundations; I remove heaviness from whole buildings. I disturb the rules of routine by showing how they can influence us. By doing this I comment on current topics and problems.“

About HBBVI

HomeBase Project in Berlin has launched their 6th artist-in-residency programme. Eighteen professional artists, performers and social entrepreneurs will be working during three months at the HomeBase LAB, Berlin on developing original works around the notion of home in their live-in studios as well as collaborating on artistic explorations in public spaces in the direct neighbourhood. They will engage in a creative communal living, educational and cultural program while having a ‘hands on’ collaboration in building different aspects of the HomeBase LAB. The objective is to continue to develop the HB LAB towards the next step of the LAB- Becoming a center for study, creation and empowerment of artists as leaders in the community in the heart of Berlin. HB BUILD VI marks the end of the HB BUILD Cycle towards this vision.

What will we BUILD?

Your own artistic practice is an individual and collaborative exploration around the notion of home, while searching for possibilities of outreach in the larger neighbourhood

In a HomeBase Build residency we work with three program parts throughout the three months. One on personal and collaborative artistic development and on applied artistic research in collaboration with a HomeBase Service client. Next to this we have the overall HB Build program focussing on the internal processes, the learning, eating and living together of the group.

Artistic development

This program part focusses on working on artistic practice. In each residency we have a focus on a specific medium, expression or theme in the arts and work with professionals. This enables artists to experiment and learn together with artists of a great variety of disciplines developing their own practice. (e.g. during the HBBV residency we had a focus on performance art and a collaboration with the Month of Performance Berlin).

Applied artistic research

This part of the program is about being an artist investigating situations as part of the development of the HomeBase Service. HB Service is a project in which we investigate the value a group of artists can bring as researchers of specific situations, ideas or problems in society. This part takes place in collaboration with an external client that works together with us for the three month period. (e.g. during the HBBV residency we had a collaboration with the city district of Pankow on the vision regarding the redevelopment of a street).

General HB Build programming

Is a weekly day of programming with guest speakers, artist teach, curated dinners and more. In the program of HomeBase BUILD VI each artist participates as: a learner, a creator and a teacher. The HomeBase BUILD group generates content, partially self-directed, within an established HomeBase setting.

The organic process of exploration will unfold within the following given structural form:

Individual art work: the majority of the time, besides the scheduled weekly group meetings (LABLern, Salon and other program parts), will be dedicated to progressive art practice in the individual studios.

Community projects: individual and collaborative work in, for and with the community related to the context of the projects around applied artistic research and artistic development.

Communal living

Next to our program we have a focus on communal living. As part of the residency artists will live and work together where our HomeBase Lab in Berlin becomes the collective point where thoughts, visions and projects are being processed together. The communal living is part of the internal processes and the creation of all that happen in HomeBase.

HB Support

In addition, some artist can take ownership of a HB support position in the HB LAB in return of a discounted fee. Areas of interest for Support Projects include: garden management, communication, social media, managing our Ignatz café, community outreach, archive, blog writing, documentation, presentation, environment. Each HB support artist will devote a minimum of 3 weekly hours to this project ending with a presentation of their contribution at the final event.

Through the HomeBase BUILD VI Artist-in-Residence program, the artists will:

Develop your professional artistic practice within a new experimental setting at the intersection of contemporary art and social change.

Create site-specific work in the context of HomeBase and its surroundings.

Participate in the weekly educational program, LabLern, and evening Salons that focus on aspects of home, questions of identity, meaningful urban living and the role of contemporary art in society.

Participate and host Curated Dinners and Public Salons linked with other cultural organisations.

Participate in the Month of Performance Art – Berlin & Week of Public Action in Pankow with an intensive programming of daily workshops, guest speakers, guest artists and performances.

Contribute to communal living through vital community projects, participating in a sustainable infrastructure as the kernel of our community.

Gain professional exposure in Berlin and the international art world through the HomeBase local and international network of curators, artists, art-lovers and neighbours.

Weekly group meetings

LABLern: Co-learning, facilitated by the HomeBase team, group and guest speakers – 3 hours a week.

HB Salon: a cultural platform which will include cultural conversations, performances, movie screenings, readings and more – followed by a group Curated Dinner – 3 hours a week.

Rafael Machado is a young guy. His mind’s hunger never rests. He’s always trying to keep it fed with new and multiple contents to learn. For now it has already digested Opera singing, five to six languages Speaking, Acting, Performing, Cooking, Saxophone playing, Community work managing, and so on. He’s ruminating a never-ending Architecture and Urban Planning graduation, and is tasting constantly sweet drops of an art research about the power and the history behind the act of preparing a meal.

Work is in progress all time» is a performance-reflection on the work process, as the subject of treatment. Performative practice evolves between the echange of ideas and choreography, guided and treated by three words: diversion, processing and phenomenology. It aims to transport the audience into a space of ambiguity and probability between realism and fiction lost in the repository, without linear structure or without static object, leaving room for subjective interpretation.

Philippa Jeffery was born in Oxford in 1973. She became a single mother at the tender age of 18 and took her son with her to Art College. Her work has always been concerned with the domestic, the feminine, the unconscious and the overlooked. Her practice spans the disciplines of dreaming, writing, drawing, print making, felt making, mask making and performance. Since 2009 she has been working on her “Sheepwoman” project performing on the streets, in galleries and festivals at home and abroad. Her performance work lies somewhere between theatre and performance art; often spontaneous, interventionist, participatory, and improvised. Her son is now 21 and an artist, musician and performer.

Johna Hansen graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture in 2013. Her interest lies in the field between architecture and art, where she works with the interaction between body, material and space. She gained experience in several different areas: performance art at Hotel Pro Forma in Copenhagen, set design for Filippa Berglund in Copenhagen, architecture studies at Tohoku University of Arts and Design in Japan and practical building experience at the architecture office BaumRaum in Germany.
Johna Hansen has a very personal and experimental approach to architecture. Her work intends to investigate and unfold the concept of everyday life and ways of building. Johna Hansen’s aim is to pin point and to question conventional perceptions and to explore new possibilities and relationships between user, material and space.

study sculpture at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. With reference to elements of nature, architecture and the body, their work searches to realize a material history in conflict with mass production and capitalist values of efficiency and functionality. Using familiar reference points, J seeks to inspire a questioning of the self and the visual cues that we use to categorize and understand the world.

Braam’s work investigates our experience of time and space, the construction of our environment and our perception of this reality.

To reach future, Braam turns to the past and goes back to the utopian idea in post-war era architecture. Present knowledge of the final result of the experiment started by Modernism gives Braam the opportunity to explore this unfinished project and a hope for a new type of living which was brought within. Through his works, the artist tries to analyse those aspects where philosophical assumptions failed, and interrogates the process of perception of the architecture itself.

Reoccurring themes in his work are the tension between man and nature and the social issues that coincide with this. You often see reoccurring mathematical structures and systems. These situations create both an intensity and complexity, but at the same time, are beautifully bright.

I was born on January 18, 1984. Raised in an artistic/creative enviroment: my both parents are architects, my grandma is a dancer, my grandfather was an actor manager… My grandparents took care of me, while my working class heroes parents worked to feed and educate my brother and me. I was a lonely boy, despite I was surrounded by my family members, school people, friends, neighbors, cousins, mainly I had empathy with children living the same life situation. After the first years with my grandparents , when I was 6, I began to stay at home, always playing with myself, sometimes with my brother, we where enclosed with our own worlds, singing and listening my dad`s records, burning toys, reading my Grimm brothers storybook that my mom read me when I was smaller. Enclosure that forced me to scape to the outside world, skipping school, overcrouding my birthday parties; my mom in every occasion gave me a few invitations, but I used to write my adress on the blackboard, so all the classroom could come; the house was full of crazy kids: bullys, nerds, regulars, larges, richs, poors, beauty queens, marshmallows…a delicious & complicated human salad.

I began studying music production in 2000, was a complete disaster, party lover, in love all the time, I loved drawing while the boring lessons took place and become an amateur photographer, because the visual approach my father gave me… In the meanwhile I started a trip-hop band, the name was Fract and does not exist anymore, it lasted a few years, we played in the Universal Forum of the Cultures, several bars and parties and recorded an EP. In a parallel way to that, I set a recording studio, asossiated with other musicians and recorded some other people in the music road. The studio broke and I desided to explode my visual restlessness, studying visual arts, I scaped a summer to New York and enrich myself with the visual thing, focusing as a photographer, inspired by Man Ray, Magritte, Remedios Varo, Bataille; mainly I love the surrealists, but more than anything inspired by my uncle Rodolfo, who was a painter and his dead was one of the first strong marks in my life.

Now, I learned that as a photographer I love having a total creative independence for doing my work, always approaching as an outsider who gets inside just with the view. If confidence is developed, I consider is important to mantain the focus and get involved with what sparks my interest, trying to be in the frame in par with my objective in order to live its situation, be there even I`m not physically there. I am a chaser of hallucinative fictions, always trying to comprehend and catch the regular reality, connecting a bridge between our fantasies and the real stuff. I worked as an assistant with Mary Ellen Mark in Oaxaca, and began my own photographer trip with my job payment, I did my project with the Oaxaca`s dancing company, till I experienced an assault was injured and had to come back to Mèxico City. I was in recovery for almost a year. After that I came to Berlin to have an Europe experience. Now I`m coming back for a second time with the HB Build V.

Elena K. Dahl was born in 1987 in Akron, Ohio. In 2013 she received her MFA in Photography at the University of Florida. Dahl has been included in various national exhibitions including “Public/Private” at Woman Made Gallery in Chicago, IL and “Monu_mental” at Antenna Gallery in New Orleans, LA. Knowing that the very concept of the “feminine“ is slippery and that to fixedly define “woman” is impossible, Dahl begins each project with the question of how to speak the voice of an always-escaping she. Dahl currently lives and works in Gainesville, FL. Her spirit animal is Patti Smith.

Trained in fine arts and graphic design, Aixa works with images, signs and words as her raw material.

The focus is on space, and in the void left by the people who once lived there. Interior spaces ranging in an attempt to show the tension between fullness and emptiness.

Digital photography is the tool used as part of the process creating a complementary communication between images and words proyecting an idea of something intimate and direct.

Using haiku as a source of inspiration there is a direct perception of things attached to the sensitive and free of abstract concepts. A mere significant nothingness using hollowing out as part of the whole, were all boundaries are dissolved.
